Randolph Gal Ghosts
On Winning Streak

The RUHS girls’ soccer team hosted Oxbow last Thursday, continuing their winning streak with a 2-0 victory. After a late start, the Ghosts came out strong and dominated the play of the game. The RUHS offense bombarded Olympian goal keeper Lisa Welch, but they were unable to capitalize and take the advantage until Jess Simpson crossed the ball to Arielle Dudek who rocketed the ball past Welch. With the 1-0 lead the Ghosts did not let up their offensive attacks while RUHS defense held the Olympians at bay allowing them very few scoring chances. Simpson sent the ball flying into the net to tally the Ghosts’ second goal of the game.

With a 2-0 advantage going into the second half, the Olympians were looking to derail the Ghosts, but their offensive attacks were fruitless. The Ghosts continued to look to score, but they were unable to add to their lead and the game ended in a 2-0 victory for the Ghosts over the Olympians. Carleen vanGulden had seven saves for RUHS and Welch had 17 saves for Oxbow.

Win Over Peoples

The ghosts traveled to Morrisville on Saturday to play the Peoples Academy Wolves where the Randolph team won again with a close 3-2 overtime victory. The Wolves came out strong against the Ghosts, scoring in the first 10 minutes of the game. Kendra Smythe passed the ball to Hannah Tewhill who slipped the ball past goalie vanGulden to take the advantage. The Ghosts looked to even the score, but they were unable to find the back of the net until Amanda Gillman scored the equalizer when her shot bounced off the post and past goalie Crystal Williams. With the score tied at 1-1 both teams continued to vie for the lead.

The Wolves came out strong in the second half and dominated the play. Peoples regained the lead when Kristina Purcell connected with Tewhill who tallied her second goal of the game. The Wolves continued to control the play, bombarding VanGulden, and with just two minutes remaining in the game it looked as if Peoples had secured the victory. The Ghosts tied the game, though, for the second time on only their second shot of the half. Kate Dempsey swung the ball from outside of the 18 yard line over the head of Williams to send the game into overtime.

Both teams came out looking to take control, but it was the Ghosts who scored the go-ahead goal in the first 10 minutes of overtime when Dudek tapped the ball to Maddie Sharrow who chipped the ball over Williams’ head on an indirect kick. The Wolves failed to capitalize on several scoring chances, and the Ghosts came away with the 3-2 overtime win. vanGulden had 13 saves for the Ghosts, and Williams had seven saves for the Wolves.

The 5-4-2 Ghosts host Harwood tomorrow at 4 p.m., and then they travel to Northfield on Monday for a 4 p.m. game. The Ghosts finish their regular season on Wednesday at home against U-32 at 4 p.m.
