Herbert G. Lyford

CHELSEA—Herbert G. "Bert" Lyford, 85, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 30, 2002 at the Rowan Court Health Care Facility in Barre. He was the son of George D. and Lillian (Taylor) Lyford, he was born July 2, 1917 in Chelsea.

He attended school on the East Hill in Chelsea and worked on the farm and for the town highway department as a young man.

He married Gertrude N. Doyle, January 2, 1938. They lived with Bert’s parents for a short time before they bought the Doyle family farm in Chelsea.

Bert and his wife worked the dairy farm for more than 42 years.

After he suffered some health problems, they sold the farm and he began logging. He harvested timber all over the central Vermont area until his retirement in 1979. The Lyfords lived at Chelsea Court for the past 12 years.

Bert enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and western music. He also loved to tend to his gardens. He was a member of the Sons of Union Veterans, H.E.H. Hall Camp #28 in Chelsea, for over 68 years and had served as commander of the group. He was also a member of the Chelsea Senior Citizens.

He was predeceased by four brothers, George, Charles, William, and Frank Lyford, and a sister, Mildred Goslant.

He is survived by his wife of Chelsea; two sons, Herbert J. Lyford of Albuquerque, N.M., and Daniel W. Lyford of Milton; a daughter, Lois H. Lyford of East Topsham; four grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; one great grandchild; four brothers, Nelson Lyford of Berlin, Casper Lyford of Marshfield, Mage Lyford of Woodstock, and Perley Goslant of Plainfield; three sisters; Anna Mattoon of Chelsea, Marion Simonds of Pomfret, and Yvonne Hilliker of Virginia; also several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. in the Highland Cemetery in Chelsea, with the Rev. David Smith officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Vermont is in charge of arrangements.
