Two More Wins For Lady Hornets

The Whitcomb Lady Hornets played their last home game of the season on Monday, Oct. 6th. For three Lady Hornets, this would be their "last hurrah" as it was also "Senior Recognition Day." The Lady Hornets played the D3 South Royalton Lady Royals to a 1-1 tie after 80 minutes of regulation and two 10 minute overtime periods.

Bill Elberty, Whitcomb High School principal, welcomed all the fans who showed up to support the athletes from both schools and introduced the seniors from each team. Senior Lady Royals were Breezy Fisk and Nicole Vincent-Roller. Both Lady Royals received a blue Gatorade with golf ribbon, to represent their blue and gold uniforms, with a congratulatory message from the Whitcomb High Booster Club.

Senior Lady Hornets were Sarah Chap, Amanda Lewis, and Charlotte Ward. Also recognized was the girls’ manager, Jenn Turk. The Lady Hornets each received a green Gatorade and long-stemmed white rose to be presented to their parents as each girl was then photographed with her parents.

During the first half, Whitcomb and South Royalton both took 12 shots. Whitcomb goalie Scottie Taylor had nine saves and South Royalton goalie Shauna Tracy had eight.

Eight minutes into the half, at 8:07, Tessa McCullough put the Hornets up 1-0. The goal, which appeared to be a South Royalton save, was ruled a goal because the goalie was over the line. With the clock winding down, at 36:44 Soro’s Ellen Lamson tied the score up from directly in front of the goal.

The game ended with a 1-1 tie after regulation, as well as after 20 minutes of overtime. Breezy Fisk was injured midway through overtime and was helped off the field. She did not return to the game.

The second half was quite similar to the first with the Royals taking 20 shots and the Hornets taking 16. The Royals had 13 second half saves, while the Hornets had 15. Shauna Tracy had 22 saves for the visiting Royals and Scottie Taylor had 23 saves for the hometown Hornets.

4-2 Win

The Whitcomb Lady Hornets traveled to Rochester to play the Lady Rockettes on Friday, Oct. 4. The Lady Hornets won the outing with a score of 4-2.

Senior Amanda Lewis scored her first goal of the season, as well as the first goal of the game, unassisted to put Whitcomb on the board. Junior Rachel Hunt scored the second goal of the game, her sixth of the season, off a pass from freshman Mindy McKenna, putting the Hornets up 2-0. Sophomore Sashalyn Kraus scored the third goal of the game, her fourth of the season, to put Whitcomb up 3-0 near the end of the half.

With less than 10 seconds left in the first half, Anna Lary scored for the Rockettes, making the score 3-1 going into half-time. With only 2 minutes and 40 seconds off the clock in the second half, Amanda Lewis scored the final goal for Whitcomb. Devon Bourassi scored Rochester’s second goal, the final of the game, off a penalty kick.

Renee Shaw had seven saves for Rochester and Scottie Taylor had 11 saves for the Whitcomb Hornets.
