‘2B or Not 2B’ at Chandler Gallery The Chandler Gallery at 71 North Main Street in Randolph, will present "2B or Not 2B," a selection of graphite pencil drawings by two artists, Ray Brown and Mark Heitzman, with two very different approaches to the medium. The show, which runs Aug. 5-28, will open with a reception Friday, Aug. 5 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Brown notes that, "There are no lines in nature, only the edges of shapes. Lines on paper describe ideas. Graphite produces beautiful and infinitely variable kinds of lines. Perception depends upon light, and graphite produces exquisite lights and darks. For me, graphite drawings are the essence of my visual ideas, usually preceding more complex works, such as oil paintings." Brown says he draws before he paints. "Sometimes many drawings will synthesize into one painting," he continues. "This exhibit is a chance to show drawings that are an end in themselves. I use mostly graphite with some supporting media. Most of my ideas are about landscape and the spaces between objects. I try to think, consider the overall design. The empty spaces being just as important as the marks. There is no music with out silence." Heitzman notes that he’s interested in found objects. "I locate them in the corners of sheds, deserted industrial sites, and junk shops. The more obscure their original purpose, the better. I consider these objects to be readymade art. Once down on paper in black and white, viewers seem to find a way to make some new sense out of these forlorn and forgotten things." Gallery hours are most weekdays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; Thursdays, 4-6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-noon. Look for the "Open" flag. ____________ |
