A Community
Rallies To Help

Probably the most wonderful thing about living in a community like Randolph is that when something needs to be done, people come forward. As we have all watched the events in the Gulf Coast these last few weeks, there are so many frustrations about how to help.

It was this frustration, which pushed us to try to have the Cajun Relief Dinner on Sept. 12 at the RUHS cafeteria. With jazz and food, we figured that at least we could give a push to some fund raising and feel like we were doing something more than nothing.

We were astounded and delighted to find that many others also wanted to help. Everyone we asked said yes. Many members of our staff volunteered to make gallons of gumbo and red beans. At RTCC, the culinary class made lemon bars and the VIP program made pans of cornbread. Human Services at RTCC donated gallons of ice tea and Coca-Cola donated cased of bottled water. Patti Schroeder, our food service manager, gave us advice, chicken and sausage, hours of help with her equipment, and paper supplies.

We had help from the Randolph Coop to locate fresh okra, and we had a donation of spicy crawfish gumbo from the Maynards who used to live in New Orleans. Several cases of tomatoes and cucumbers arrived from a Tunbridge organic farm. Anna Sease engaged her students in making the banana pudding.

Jazz students just beginning the year pulled together some great music. 7th and 8th grade French students made a colorful banner "Laissez les bons temps rouler, encore" and other French students made "Bouquets d’Evangeline" to decorate the tables.

We had more than a dozen servers, table decorators and clean up people galore. We thank sincerely everyone who made this great even possible.

Special thanks to so many community members who showed up and donated over $2500 to the relief cause. With an anonymous donation of $1000 and raffle money, we probably took in $3500 for the Red Cross relief effort.

We stand humbled in the task before the American people in helping so many in need, but we are encouraged by the contributions of so many here right within our own community circle. Keep us the good work. There is more to do.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
