SOUTH RANDOLPH—Fred Small, 69, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, Jan. 21, 2006, at his home. He was born March 28, 1936, in Hartland, the son of Ernest and Gertrude (Shepard) Small. He was raised and attended school in Hartland and Great Barrington, Mass., and was married to Joyce Manning on June 12, 1957, in Phoenix City, Ala. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and except for a few years in Alburg, lived most of his life in the Randolph area. He had worked as a diesel mechanic for DeCato Brothers in Lebanon, N.H. and Rouse’s Point, N.Y., from 1974-98, and had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed woodworking, flower gardening, fishing, yard sales, and bluegrass music and festivals. Survivors include his wife, Joyce F. Small of South Randolph; son Rod Small and his wife, Ellen, of Sharon; daughters, Robin Lynch and her husband Bill of West Fairlee, Bonnie Barnett and her husband Tom of Barre; Linda Small and her husband Steve of South Randolph, and Barbara Allen and her husband Jeff of Graniteville; a brother, Sumner Small of Randolph; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cenceal Joyce Small; a grandson, T.J. Barnett; five brothers, Claude, Herbert, Henry, Glen and Edson Small; and five sisters, Lillian LaRose, Claricey Wilson, Belle Hodgkins, Winnie LaRose, and Cora Small. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Jan. 24, at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, with Rev. Ronald E. Rilling officiating. He shared scripture and led a time of remembrance, where granddaughters Tanya Barnett, Cindy Small, Brandi Barnett and Amanda McHugh gave the eulogy. A special song from the grandchildren, "When I Look to the Sky" was played. A reception followed at the Green Mountain Gospel Chapel. Burial with military honors will be Saturday, May 20, at 11 a.m. at the South View Cemetery in Randolph. ____________ |
