Sardonis
Sculpture
Dedicated
At U-Maine

Randolph sculptor Jim Sardonis was on hand last weekend as his new bronze sculpture was dedicated along with the new physical education complex at the University of Maine in Presque Isle. These giant fiddlehead ferns, almost 10 feet tall, dominate the entrance and are an inviting place to sit, as these two students found.

The bronze fiddleheads spring from a black slab of Quebec marble, which sits atop a base fashioned by Randolph woodworker Kevin Harty

Three separate dedications involved the sculpture, which was the winning proposal among more than 40 submitted to the University for a competition.

The fiddleheads echo the theme of grouping which is common in Sardonis' work; he designed the gentle bending of each towards each to create a feeling of mutual supportiveness.
