The Lady Red Devils traveled to Craftsbury last Friday evening to bring home their fourth win. The varsity squad came home with a 54-36 victory, achieving a new game high of 54 points. The first half was quite difficult for the girls to get settled playing on a court that is not even fit for a middle school game, let alone a varsity level game. However, the girls managed to adapt to their surroundings and play ball. Craftsbury came out in a 2-3 zone, so the girls set up in a 3-2 offense and worked around the perimeter to shift the zone. Chelsea found several openings underneath the basket after shifting Craftbury’s zone a few times. However, Craftsbury didn’t give up. Although they couldn’t get inside the lane for a lay-up, Craftsbury began shooting outside to stay with the Devils. It was tied 19-19 at the half. The Lady Devils came out in the second half full of energy and ready to win. Chelsea outscored the Chargers 35-17. Chelsea turned to Mary Childs (nine rebounds) and Laurel Adams (eight rebounds) to pull down the boards, and Lindsey Smith (five steals) to force the other team to turn over the ball. Chelsea’s energy was the key factor in their win. They had intensity and worked together as a team. Chelsea was led by Maureen Driscoll with 22 points, and Smith with 13 points. The Lady Devils play at home against Williamstown this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Junior Varsity Chelsea’s junior varsity squad came out strong last Friday night in Craftsbury, and won, 44-11. Bonasera also pulled down 15 rebounds for the win, while Marisa Osgood pulled down eight of her own. The junior varsity will face Williamstown on Saturday at 1 p.m. By Maureen Driscoll |
