Atwood New VLS Vice-President

For Finance & Administration

Lorraine Atwood, CPA, Vermont Law School’s comptroller since 2001, has been named vice president for finance and administration. She has broad responsibility for Vermont Law School’s finance and business operations, capital projects, human resources, and buildings and grounds.

President and Dean Jeff Shields, in naming Atwood, said, "Lorraine Atwood brings strong credentials in accounting, financial management, and community leadership. The Law School is fortunate to have someone of her caliber and experience in this critical position."

Atwood replaces Robert A. Foose, who served as vice president for 11 years and continues to serve the law school on a part-time basis as a special assistant to the president.

Vice President Atwood received her B.S. degree in Economics from Williams College and her M.S. degree in Accounting from Northeastern University. She attended the Vermont Leadership Institute of the Snelling Center for Government. Her career highlights include serving as a senior accountant for Coopers & Lybrand and as business manager for a healthcare software company in Boston. Her regional positions include comptroller of D.T.S.S., a Metropolitan Life Insurance Company subsidiary based in Hanover, N.H.; and part-time positions with Tally Systems in Hanover, and Bridgman Valiante & Villard, P.C., in Lebanon, N.H.

Atwood, who now lives in Sharon, formerly lived in South Royalton. She served on the Royalton School Board for seven years and was chair for three years, and has also served as town auditor. She is currently a member of the Strategic Planning Committee of the American Council on Education's Office of Women in Higher Education, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Vermont Society of Certified Public Accountants. She is the mother of four children, and her husband, Bradford Atwood, graduated from Vermont Law School in 1990.

Andrea Symonds, CPA, replaces Atwood as comptroller. Symonds, also of Sharon, previously served as controller for Alice Peck Day Health Systems Corporation in Lebanon, N.H. She received her B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Vermont.
