The Randolph Gal Ghosts had a tough week, getting handed two losses to bring their record to 10-7. Randolph lost to Mt. Abe away Friday, 49-44, and dropped to Lamoille at home Tuesday, 37-24.

Lamoille Game

Good defense by both the Gal Ghosts and the Lamoille Lancers kept Tuesday’s score very low. Lamoille went on a 7-2 run to start off the first quarter with Randolph’s only basket coming from Laura Koloski. Lamoille’s #13 Rachel Wellman was a threat the Gal Ghosts didn’t seem to have an answer for.

Brynn Fabian and Lamoille swapped hoops and Sharayah Nonemacher made a great leaping steal but time ran out before the Ghosts could capitalize. The Lancers led 9-6 at the end of one.

Things looked up for Randolph at the start of the second as Rachel DiStefano led off with a drive through the Lancers defense and a hoop. Unfortunately Lamoille answered with six points. DiStefano kept the Gal Ghosts offense alive with another hoop and a freebie to bring Randolph within four, 15-11.

The Lancers added a foul shot but Koloski scored inside and Fabian snatched the ball from Lamoille and went all the way for the basket. Lamoille held a slim 16-15 edge at the half time break—a score that seems ridiculously low but speaks to the tough defense played by both teams.

There was no scoring for 3-plus minutes in the third with Lamoille breaking the stalemate first. Fabian matched that shot and Koloski hit from the charity stripe for the 18-18 tie. Nonemacher played exceptional defense in the third. With time running out Lamoille hit two foul shots in a game that was getting increasingly rough with very inconsistent calls by the refs. The Lancers led 20-18 heading into the final stanza.

Lamoille started strong in the fourth quarter and outscored Randolph 17-6 for the win. Lamoille’s high scorer was Wellman with 21 points.

Scoring for the Gal Ghosts were Koloski with 9, Fabian 6, DiStefano 5, and Emily Howe and Nonemacher, 2 each. Randolph had a bad night at the foul line and only hit 6 of 18.

The J.V. girls also lost to Lamoille, 55-20. Ashley Chase was the high scorer with 6 points.

Mt. Abe

DiStefano and Anna Reis got the Gal Ghosts off to a good start Friday with three hoops putting Randolph quickly ahead, 6-0. The Mt. Abe Eagles threw in a trey and a basket to come within one, but Shelby Peltier had two timely steals with Howe scoring off one of those. The Eagles ended the first on a six-point run to lead, 11-8.

In the second, Koloski nailed a three-pointer to put the Ghosts ahead 18-17 and then the score see-sawed. Mt. Abe got the upper hand at the break to lead, 21-20.

Koloski scored the first six points of the third for Randolph but the Eagles matched every shot. The only other basket the Gal Ghosts could get was a break through hoop by DiStefano and Mt. Abe ended the third ahead, 34-28.

Howe and A. Reis came through for Randolph in the fourth with Howe adding four and Reis two. A. Reis and DiStefano brought the Ghosts within two, 42-40 with 2:19 on the clock.

Mt. Abe hit a freebie and A. Reis hit a jumper to come within one and they stayed close but with 38 seconds on the clock the Eagles hit two foul shots and then made a basket to close the game out.

DiStefano ended the night with a double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Koloski added 14 points, A. Reis 8 and Howe 6.

The J.V. squad also lost to Mt. Abe, 58-22. The high scorers were Hannah Becker with 9 and Amanda Gerstenmaier with 7.

The Gal Ghosts play Lyndon away tonight and make up their game versus Harwood Saturday, Feb. 11. The J.V. game starts at 2 with varsity following at 3:30. The Gal Ghosts final game is Tuesday, Feb. 14 against U-32 at home.
