By Cody Montgomery

The Randolph boys basketball team finished this past week 1-1 after an easy win at Oxbow last Wednesday and a tough loss at Division I Harwood on Friday.

Oxbow

Randolph traveled to Bradford last Wednesday to take on the Oxbow Olympians, and defeated them easily, 53-41.

Randolph’s defense shut down Oxbow in the first half, limiting them to only 15 points. With good defensive rebounding from Paul Bianco and Tim Grandy, Randolph was able to use the fast break to their advantage and score 12 points against Oxbow in the first quarter, making the score 12-4, Randolph.

Randolph’s shooters woke up in the second quarter with a trey by Ben Alicea on the first possession. Baskets by Kevin Currier, Grandy, and Zac Briggs gave Randolph a 23-8 lead. A small run by Oxbow was shut down by a three from Alicea and two from Grandy. The score at the end of the half favored Randolph, 30-15.

The third quarter saw Oxbow and Randolph trade baskets back and forth off the fast break. Alicea led the charge on the offensive end of the floor, while Grandy led the front on defense. Connor Fowler hit a three near the end of the third to give Randolph a 41-25 edge.

Oxbow started out the quarter scoring five quick points, which were answered by a Grandy lay-in and three pointer, giving Randolph a 48-32 lead. Oxbow would make a late run, but baskets from Grandy, Fowler, and Thomas Jacobs sealed the 53-41 victory.

High scorers for Randolph were Alicea with 16, 12 coming in the first half, Grandy with 15, Fowler with 8 off the bench. Also scoring were Kevin Currier and Zac Briggs with 4 points apiece, and Ira Tillberg added one. High scorer for Oxbow was Dan McKelvey with 13.

Harwood

After a good first half for Randolph, costly turnovers proved their undoing in a 57-50 loss Friday night at Harwood.

Randolph started out on an 8-2 run in the first three minutes with a three from Grandy, and inside baskets from Briggs and Alicea. Good defense held Harwood to nine points in the first quarter, giving the boys a 13-9 lead.

It took both teams a few minutes in the second quarter to get going, but that changed after Fowler’s three-pointer gave Randolph a seven-point edge. Later, Fowler hit a lay-in inside, and Grandy went coast to coast for a lay-up to give the boys a 23-19 halftime edge.

Harwood’s shooters woke-up in the third quarter, and Randolph turnovers turned into points for Harwood. Briggs scored all but two points in the third for Randolph, but Harwood then went on a 9-0 run, and led 40-33 heading into the final stanza.

Kevin Currier got Randolph going in the fourth with 4 quick points. Harwood answered, but a Paul Bianco jumper got the boys within five, 44-39. Randolph fouled Harwood again while taking a three-pointer, and Harwood hit all three foul shots. Randolph came right back again with a Grandy trey, with the deficit still at five points.

With 50 seconds left Briggs forced a steal, and Grandy found Currier in the corner open for a three-pointer, bringing them within three, 53-50. With 12.8 seconds left Harwood hit both of their free throws, putting the game out of reach.

High scorer for Randolph was Zac Briggs with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Ben Alicea had 9 points and 6 assists. Also scoring for Randolph was Grandy with 8, Currier with 7, Connor Fowler off the bench with 5, and Paul Bianco with three points and 8 rebounds.

Connolly took a jumper from mid-range with four seconds left, which was tipped and missed by Markus Farnham, which was then tipped in by Connolly as time expired for the victory. John White was leading scorer with 20 points, Farnham had 12, and Connolly had 8 of his own.
