Randolph rejected the idea of a work camp in town ten years ago, very loudly. We don’t have any more incentive to accept a work camp now. One apparent incentive for the town to host the proposed camp is to have the state pay for water and sewer lines down Beanville Road, to attract more business. That’s not a good reason for a homeowner to go along with it. Even though the Randolph homeowner already carries more of the tax burden than a commercial property owner does, we still have empty commercial real estate in town. Some of these shells have been empty for years. This should tell us something. A work camp next to the landfill won’t make the area more attractive. And while the state naturally offers assurances of safety, living near a work camp is like living near any other potentially disruptive installation. The other possibility is lowered labor cost on work the prisoners might do in town. This would be good, but the benefit is pretty limited. Let’s reject the camp again.
