At the Trough

Thanks to Dick Tracy, Jr. ("Bernie Grows Fat at Public Trough." 8/24006) for courageously alerting us to the fact that because Bernie Sanders’ salary is derived from tax revenues, he is not really an ally of working Vermonters. It is clear to me now that because Mr. Tarrant (to whose kind hearted, public spirited Karl Rove style advertising we are currently being subjected on our airways!) has personal millions to spend in his attempt to buy this election, he must surely be a champion of working class concerns!

Mr. Tracy used the derisive yet always popular "pig at the public trough" analogy that Republicans feel so aptly describes anyone whose salary is derived from tax revenues.

Since receiving your salary from taxpayer funding is obviously so despicable, Mr. Tracy would certainly agree that our local police force should be immediately disbanded and replaced by privately funded militias (we could use Iraqi death squads or the Iranian funded Hezbollah fighters as our shining model). Of course, the state troopers would have to go too.

The fulltime fire fighters and EMTs of each of our cities and towns are obvious sponges on our society as are the postal carriers who delivered that birthday card to your mom.

It goes without saying that your child’s teacher, school nurse or guidance counselor is nothing more than a leech sucking the hapless taxpayer dry. The town and/or state road crew out there plowing in the teeth of a blizzard, the state worker who processes your driver’s license application, the federal employees who provide your Social Security checks, the paramedic who rushes to your father’s house to administer CPR and the men and women of our armed forces who are giving their lives and limbs everyday in this Republican generated nightmare we call the Iraq war?? Yep…you guessed it…all pigs at the public trough!

Compared to these selfish porkies, a fine, upstanding multimillionaire like Rich Tarrant deserves every last tax break that King George and the rest of the valiant Republican politicians (BTW, they are not pigs, they are patriots!) can give him. After all, he’s got an election to buy!
