Modern medicine can prolong both life and death. Those who face a near and certain death are free to prolong that death, for their own reasons, through the use of medicine. Others who do not wish to prolong their own suffering, and the suffering of their loved ones, should be equally free to make their own decisions. The proposed end-of-life law has very strict controls. It does not enable snap decisions based on the pain of the moment. It does not violate anyone’s choice to prolong their death; it enables those who want to avoid a prolonged death to do so. The state has no place making end-of-life decisions, and no place forcing one group’s religious beliefs on those who do not share a particular faith. We should support this law for what it is, or at lest stand aside and not oppose it for what it isn’t. Dave Crosby Randolph ____________ |
