Morgans Recreate 1796 History More than 100 spectators lined the Morgan Mile in Brookfield last Saturday, Sept. 16 as 12 Morgan horses competed in an official race sponsored by the Vermont Morgan Horse Association. These Morgans trotted down the historic Morgan Mile Road where the Morgan horse Figure raced against two New York running horses in 1796, defeating both easily. The horses, who were entered into two divisions (two in harness and 10 under saddle), were raced in heats of two horses, with the fastest time of each heat recorded. Raced in harness, Skyway Jamelle with Melissa Wise beat River Echo Hamilton and Cheryl Rivers with a time of 1:08:07 The ten Morgans who raced under saddle raced in five heats, two at a time with the fastest four qualifying for the semi final. Again this year, the mother-daughter race between Sue Brown and Victoria Brown found that daughter could still out-race Mother. Robert Holland found out much of the same as Althea Holland out raced dad in their father-daughter race. In the final four semi-final, Skyway Jamelle ridden by Melissa Wise pulled off another victory, beating River Echo Starshine ridden by Cheryl Rivers with a time of 1:02:95. The surprise of the day was the semi final race when Highover Crown Victoria and Althea Holland beat dad (Robert Holland) for the second time with a time of 1:08:66. The championship race under saddle found Skyway Jamelle and Melissa Wise beating Highover Crown Victoria and Althea Holland, with a time of 1:03:97. ____________ |
