Lady Hornets Earn 4-1 Record
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The Whitcomb Lady Hornets are tearing up the field and forcing their opponents to take notice as they now stand at 4-1 after handing the D-III SoRo Lady Royals with a 2-1 defeat in their only meeting of the season.

It took awhile but the Hornets managed to score at 27:26 of the first period when a pass from Killian White sent to Tracy Zisselsberger found the back of the net putting Whitcomb in the driver’s seat. Another Zisselsberger goal at 33:01 from a direct kick kept the Hornets up headed into the break.

The 2-zip game stayed intact until the 26th minute of the second half when Mari Lamson delivered the orb to Heather Burbine, who cut the Hornet lead to one, but that was all the Royals managed as Whitcomb held on for the win.

Logan Russell made seven saves off nine shots for South Royalton and Maggie Eddy made 14 saves off 15 shots for the Hornets.

Win Over TSA

For the second time this season and in consecutive outings junior Molly Taylor tallied a hat trick as the Hornets stung TSA, 6-1, one week ago.

Whitcomb wasted no time as they got things started early just one minute and fourteen seconds into the game when Taylor sent the ball into the nets from the right side for an unassisted first goal. Whitcomb’s second goal was anything but expected and came off a boot, then a bounce and a bang as fullback Emily Wright sent the orb into the nets from midfield at 6:58. Taylor netted her second goal of the game when a feed from foreign exchange student Kerstin Kraeutlein at 16:42 passed over the out-stretched hands of Phoenix goalie Zannah Pierce capping the first half scoring.

Retiring from the break the Hornets pounced again just two seconds short of the four minute mark when Zizzelsberger scored an unassisted goal that skimmed off the fingertips of Pierce and again just 33 seconds later when Taylor passed the ball to Maya Robinson who earned the goal when the ball bounced in off the left post. Freshman Emily Durfee earned her first varsity assist after she crossed the ball over to Taylor who nailed the goal and the hat trick at 5:26 giving the Hornets a commanding lead 6-zip.

A Chloe Madigan penalty kick in the 36th minute of play struck the left post and shot back out toward keeping Whitcomb’s shutout hopes alive but a mere two minutes and one second later TSA and Madigan struck pay-dirt and erased the shoutout bid. Zannah Pierce and Emily Chadwick shared goal tending for Sharon with Pierce making 3 saves and Chadwick 2 saves off 11 shots and Maggie Eddy made 10 saves off 10 shots for the Hornets.

Whitcomb plays the Concord Wildcats tomorrow and the Cabot Huskies on Tuesday at home. Both games start a 4:30.
