Coming onto the field after their first loss of the season the Whitcomb boys were hoping for the best but instead they got the Royal flush when the D-III South Royalton Royals came to Bethel Tuesday afternoon and won. Royals Tyler Manning and Tyrell Manning were unstoppable combining for five of the Royal’s seven goals. Both earned hat tricks, Tyler with scoring four goals and Tyrell assisting for three goals. Tyrell also scored one goal in the outing. Former Hornet and now Royal Colin Judge scored the first goal of the game off a Jack Murphy pass at 31:00 before the Mannings took over with Tyler scoring and Tyrell assisting four minutes later. Hornet Brian Ward cut the Royal lead to one with four minutes remaining when he scored an unassisted goal. Tyler scored the third goal for South Royalton off a Judge corner kick before the Mannings repeated their combination performance for a 4-1 game. Tyrell scored off a direct kick in the 27th minute and Darren Slack scored in the 36th minute when he headed the ball in after a Tyrell corner kick deflected off Hornet defender Joel Wright. South Royalton finished the game with another Tyler/Tyrell goal just one minute later as the Royals simply outplayed and outscored Whitcomb. Joel Wright finished in the nets and made seven saves for Whitcomb while Scott Killian had 13 saves through 60 minutes of play. Trevor Webster had seven saves for the Royals. Tough Loss With the drizzly weather and the slippery turf came the first loss for the Whitcomb Hornets in a very long time. Not only was it a loss but a shutout as well when the Hornets hit the road for a contest with The Sharon Academy last Thursday. Unfortunately TSA sent the Hornets back to Bethel with their first blemish of the season in the 3-0 game. The Phoenix were able to take advantage and score when senior midfielder Phineas Ellis planted a free kick in the 11th minute of the game for a 1-0 game and then managed to add a second goal off a penalty kick by Willy Ruiz at the 24 minute mark for a 2-0 half time lead. TSA scored their final goal in the 17th minute of the second half when a failed Ruiz head shot was rebounded and sent into the nets by defender William Imbo. Brad Farrell had one save for TSA in the win and Scott Killian had 10 saves for Whitcomb. Whitcomb hits the road Friday, Sept. 22 and on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they face first the Concord Wildcats and then the Cabot Huskies. Both games start at 4:30. ____________ |
