I came away from a Neal Fox political dinner at Bethel’s White Church last week absolutely certain that we must send Neal Fox to the legislature this year. Regardless of one’s political philosophy, the facts cannot be disputed that were brought out at the dinner. We are a state where our citizens shoulder one of the highest tax burdens in America, but with too little to show for it. Our school funding mechanism is a mysterious and jury-rigged procedure that few people understand, and (as everyone in Bethel and Rochester knows) is unpredictable year-to-year. It takes too much of our hard-earned income from us, and its uncertainty causes a real strain on those of us who live on a careful budget. It is also a failure in the end-result department. Our education administration has been getting worse year to year and we’ve got to have a change. What I particularly liked was Fox’s willingness to explain, logically and unemotionally, how he differs from the incumbent. From the many examples he cited, it is clear that Fox will base his legislative judgment on its end-effect on us, the working taxpayers, rather than seek conformity to some abstract political philosophy. Another point came out loud and clear last week. If we don’t get more practical-minded Vermonters like Fox into the legislature, Gov. Douglas could lose his veto power and find himself unable to keep some of the wackier legislative proposals out of our law books. Carol A. DeFreitas Bethel ____________ |
