"One of the hottest acts in folk music today," as described by The Boston Globe will play Chandler Music Hall in Randolph Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The Cottars have become Cape Breton Island’s latest musical success story in a remarkably short period of time. That story is spreading quickly across North America, Europe, Asia and beyond where their performances have received standing ovations at virtually every show they’ve performed, from an early 2001 concert for Canadian legend Wayne Gretsky, to a concert at Boston’s Symphony Hall with renowned Irish tenor John McDermott. The story becomes even more remarkable when you consider that the sensational quartet is made up of two young brother/sister pairs. Ciaran and Fiona MacGillivary and Jimmy and Rosanne Mackenzie, all between the ages of 16 and 18, have been playing traditional music since early childhood. "With their combination of incredible musicianship, amazing voices and wonderful dancing, what a future they have ahead of them," said Paddy Maloney of The Chieftains. The Cottars are: Ciaran MacGillivray, 17, on keyboard, guitar, whistle, vocals, percussion and step-dance; Fiona MacGillivray, 16, on vocals, whistle, harp, percussion and step-dance; Roseanne MacKenzie, 16, on fiddle, vocals, whistle, percussion and step-dance, and Jimmy MacKenzie, 18, on guitar, banjo and percussion. "That Roseanne, she's the next Natalie McMaster, for sure," exclaimed Dick Drysdale of Randolph after he and his wife heard the brothers-sisters act in Cape Breton last October. Formed in late 2000, they named their band after the cottage-dwelling farm laborers and tenant farmers that formed the backbone of highland Scots society and culture. The Cottars’ debut CD, "Made in Cape Breton," was recorded in 2002 and was released to critical acclaim just two months later. It was hailed as a "stunning debut" by the Boston Herald and it garnered the group a 2003 East Coast Music Award for Best New Artist. Since then, The Cottars have recorded two more CDs, including "On Fire!" with the legendary Chieftans. The Cottars are sure to dance, play and sing their way into your heart! For tickets call 728-6464 or email tickets@chandler-arts.org. Pot-Luck Thank-You Prior to the concert at 6 p.m., there will be a pot luck dinner for all New World Festival volunteers in the Upper Gallery. Discounted tickets for volunteers are also available to repeat the heart-felt thanks from the festival committee for yet another wonderful event. This concert is presented by Chandler Center for the Arts and sponsored by The Herald and Penny Brook Construction. |
