New conservation plans for Randolph’s floodplain forest will be the topic of an October 11 informational meeting, 7 p.m at Kimball Public Library. The meeting will be hosted by Randolph Area Community Development Corporation (RACDC) and Randolph Technical Career Center (RTCC), who are partnering to conserve, manage, and maintain the 18-acre floodplain forest located off Prince Street. The floodplain forest is a dynamic environment, home to sizeable populations of ostrich fern (fiddlehead) and horsetail, and forever changing due to the river’s natural fluctuations in flow and course. The forest is also changing due to invasive species such as Japanese knotweed and wild chervil. RACDC sees the forest as a unique ecosystem and community asset for education and recreation. Linda Morse, RACDC’s volunteer floodplain forest coordinator, is helping to facilitate conservation activities. Student Stewards Assisting are students in RTCC’s Environmental Sciences & Natural Resources program. ES&NR students receive instruction in environmental studies, forestry, logging, farming, agribusiness, landscaping, air/water/soil testing, and agriculture. They will begin working in the floodplain forest this fall. The project will provide training and practical work experience for students, while also assisting with species monitoring and forest management. Students will work on specified projects under the supervision of their instructor, Gerry Reymore, beginning with trail maintenance, invasive monitoring, and forest management. If you would like to learn more about this project, share your ideas, or volunteer time, energy, or expertise, please attend this meeting. And keep your eyes out for a special opening and sneak preview of the floodplain forest "natural history kiosk" in the coming weeks! ____________ |
