Ruth E. Hewitt

CHELSEA—Ruth E. Hewitt, 86, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 27, 2006 at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington. She was born Sept. 12, 1920 in Mt. Holly, the daughter of Herbert H. and Bertha (Davenport) Harris.

She attended school in Mt. Holly and Randolph Center and then worked for her father on the family farm. At the age of 18 she married Henry H. Hewitt on Nov. 12, 1938.

She was an extremely hard worker her entire life. As a young woman she helped her father with the daily chores at the family farm. Later, she went to work for Shorty Danforth as a short order cook at the Swirly Top Restaurant in Sharon, later working at the Sugar House Restaurant in Royalton. During much of this time, she also worked full time at the Green Mountain Glove Co., in Randolph as a glove cutter for well over 20 years. For many years, she worked seven days a week and what little time she had at home she spent caring for her children. In her later years, she cleaned houses in the local area.

She loved to garden and spent many hours canning and preserving much of the food she grew. Her gardening skills weren’t limited to vegetables, as she enjoyed growing flowers. She also loved to cook and could make a delicious meal out of nothing. Any visitor who came by during supper time never left her home hungry. She enjoyed cooking for holiday meals and her trailer would be overflowing with her large family for these special gatherings.

She also enjoyed feeding the birds especially the wild turkey. She was devoted to the care of her cat and loyal companion, "Max."

Survivors include two sons: James E. Hewitt and his wife Shirley, of Chelsea; and Thomas L. Hewitt and his wife, Barbara, of North Randolph; two daughters: Judith E. Campbell of Northfield, Sandra H. Race and her husband, John, of East Randolph; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grand-children, a sister, Etta Dean of Cavendish; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Wood of Tunbridge; two sisters: Marion Buzzell of Lyme, N.H.; and Dorothy Garrow of Mt. Holly; and a brother, Alfred Harris of Tunbridge.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Branch View Cemetery in South Royalton, with the Rev. James Proctor officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Ver-mont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea is in charge of arrange-ments.
