Candidates for office are generally not as good as their proponents make out, or as bad as the other party would have you believe. In the Vermont race for Governor, we are blessed with two fine candidates with roots in Vermont and strong governmental backgrounds. Jim Douglas is a classic conservative, who if anything has gotten a little more regressive in his second term. His go-slow approach has its appeal, yet many of his proposals, like adding a surtax to those already getting health insurance to help cover the cost of the uninsured, simply do not make sense in this day and age. Scudder Parker, although a past Senator from the rather conservative region of the Northeast Kingdom, can best be described as a progressive. He has an activist approach to issues like energy and health care. While there are risks involved with taking action, it is often the only way that problems can be effectively addressed. This year, of the two fine candidates for governor of Vermont, I am going to look towards the future and vote for Scudder Parker. John Freitag South Strafford |
