Two gifted singer-songwriters, Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky, will come together at Chandler Music Hall Saturday, Nov. 11 for a 7:30 p.m. tour-de-force concert. The performance will feature solo performances, as well as a shared set.

The Boston Globe called Shindell "a master builder of songs, always leading listeners toward the emotional essence of the moment or the character he is evoking;" while The New Yorker called Kaplansky "a truly gifted performer…with strong flat-picking and a bag full of enchanting songs."

An expatriate New Yorker now living in Buenos Aires, Shindell is a meticulous craftsman of song whose five studio albums and one live recording have been revered by critics and fans alike. Innovative, original and occasionally spiritual, Shindell’s songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society’s fringes.

Blessed with a dramatist’s talent for holding his listener’s attention from the opening to the closing lines of every song, Shindell has earned the highest praise for his impressive body of work. Following college, he traveled to Europe, living the life of an itinerate street musician in Paris. Returning to New York, he pursued his interest in philosophy and religion by enrolling at Union Theological Seminary, but, instead of entering the priesthood, he became a songwriter as songs began to pour out.

With Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams, Shindell collaborated on a side project they named "Cry Cry Cry," a democratic fusion of their talents on a program almost entirely comprised of cover songs. The CD was released in 1998 to high praise and the trio toured well into 2000, before resuming their individual careers.

Kaplansky’s musical career has not been an uninterrupted journey. With time out to pursue a doctorate in psychology and work with chronically mentally ill adults and her recent focus on motherhood, she brings a rich perspective to her music. The power and texture of her voice are matched by the imagery and emotions of her lyrics and melodies.

Barely out of high school, Kaplansky took off for New York City where she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers, including Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, and Cliff Eberhardt. With a flair for harmony, she was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them, but she was convinced that her calling was in another direction and left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Psychology. She has since left her private practice for her first love, music.

Reserved seat tickets can be ordered by calling the Chandler Box Office at 728-6464 or by email at tickets@chandler-arts.org.

This concert is presented by Chandler Center for the Arts and sponsored by Century 21 and Curves, with media sponsorship by The Point.

During intermission and before and after the performance visit the Chandler Gallery for "Seeing Eye to Eye," in which Whitcomb High School senior Maya Robinson presents an exhibit of photographs from International Youth Exchange Programs spanning 25 years of the world beyond our boarders. The show runs through Nov. 19.
