Whitcomb Alum Now Coaching
At Lyndon State College
By Martha Slater

Vincent Maloney, a 1997 graduate of Whitcomb High School, was recently named as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Lyndon State College. Last season, Maloney was the assistant men’s basketball coach there, and he will keep that position, as well.

During his high school years, Maloney played on the Whitcomb Hornets basketball team coached by Mike Johnson, which won the Div. III state championship. Coincidentally, the teams at Lyndon are also called the Hornets.

Maloney, who earned his bachelors degree in sports management from Lyndon State in 2002, also played for the Lyndon men’s team that competed in the NAIA National tournament in 2001. As coach of the Lyndon Lady Hornets, he’ll put his basketball knowledge to use in hopes of leading them to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) tournament.

This year, although just eight women come out for the team, fortunately, six of them are returning players. Their coach says that the small squad means "we’ll have to play more zone defense." He hopes his players can conserve energy playing zone instead of man defense. They also need to stay healthy and keep out of foul trouble in order to achieve their goal of winning 70% of their games and receiving a bid to the USCAA tournament.

Now working as an admissions counselor for his alma mater, Maloney "went there and never left," says his proud mother, Marie LaBossiere, a former Bethel resident, who moved to West Burke to be nearer her son. "He loves basketball and coaching so much, and it’s great that he gets to do what he loves to do."
