A Reason For
Thanksgiving

A dark cloud passed over the editor's Thanksgiving plans last week, as eldest son, Robin Drysdale, called from Brooklyn to say he wouldn't be visiting after all.

On Tuesday, his beloved and loveable little dog, Luna, was stolen as he was tethered in front of a post office where Robin had stopped in for a short errand.

Robin was devastated and told his family he was busy distributing dozens of posters around his Brooklyn neighborhood with Luna's photograph. He wanted to be ready in case a call came in response, he said.

"Fat chance," is what we thought here in Vermont, though we didn't say so. The idea of a stolen dog reappearing through the kindness of strangers in Brooklyn seemed beyond imagining.

But Brooklyn is much more a community kind of place than most Vermonters know. And Thanksgiving morning, Robin received the call he had dreamed about.

An Hispanic woman a few blocks away had been given the dog, as a third-hand gift. She had also seen the posters and responded to them. Robin could have his dog back.

Thus lifted in spirits, Luna's owner made his way to Randolph for the rest of the weekend, and the new ping pong table received a lot of attention.
