It looks like injuries will hamper the Randolph Gal Ghosts chances, at least in the beginning of their season. Senior starter Rachel DiStefano has a torn ACL, that she injured in the first practice and will be very doubtful for the rest of the year. Returning guard senior Morgan Stewart badly tore a ligament in her ankle in soccer season and will see limited action this year. Fellow guard Kelsie Higgins is recovering from a stress fracture in her foot she received this summer. It is hoped she will be able to play all season. However, the news is not all bad. The Ghosts lost just two players to graduation last year, Anna Reis and Laura Koloski. Randolph has four healthy returning seniors, Emily Howe, Bryn Fabian, Shelby Peltier and Sharayah Nonemacher; two guards and two forwards. Returning juniors Ashley and Andrea Chase are good to go in the guard spots and Gwen Reis will be an important cog under the boards. New to the team this season are freshman forward Arielle Con-nolly and sophomore Lyndsey Smith. Both girls are very good athletes and bring some height and speed to the team. Freshman Katie Jickling will be practicing with the team, but will see mostly J.V. playing time. Alan Stewart is returning to the head coaching spot and says that, "We will probably take our lumps in the beginning of the season, but should do pretty good by the end. Our scrimmages showed improve-ment but we need to get stronger. We need all five players to score out there, we don’t have a super scorer." New this year is J.V. coach, Aiden West. West is not new to coaching at Randolph Union High School as he has coached both soccer and baseball in the past few years. There will also be a freshman team this year. The junior high teams will be coached by Mike Scoppe for the eighth graders and Laura Miller for the seventh grade girls. The season opener for the Gal Ghosts will be Tuesday, Dec. 5 versus Northfield away. J.V. will begin at 6 p.m. followed by varsity at 7:30 p.m. ____________ |
