Eleanor Ashley FRANKLIN, IND.— Eleanor Rutledge Ashley, 89, formerly of Rochester and Middlebury, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006 at the Franklin United Methodist Home in Franklin, Ind. She was born June 8, 1917 in Winthrop, Mass.; the daughter of Edward L. and Cornelia (Tracy) Ashley. She graduated from the Miss Wheelock School in Boston and from National Lewis University (a teachers college) in Evanston, Ill. She was an elementary school teacher in Skokie, Ill. for over 40 years. After her retirement, she taught English to non-English speaking graduate students at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She spent many summers with her family in Rochester and Middlebury. More recently she had lived at the Park House in Rochester, before moving to the Franklin United Methodist Home. She had a life long interest in art and travel. She had taken many courses at Middlebury College and loved to go swimming in Lake Dunmore. Survivors include her brother, Dr. Gardner Ashley of Franklin, Ind.; her sister, Julia Acker of Catonsville, Md.; a nephew, Dr. James Acker of Elkridge, Md.; and many cousins in Vermont. Memorial services will be held at the Rochester Federated Church at a later date and burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester.
