Northfield Upsets
Randolph By 1
By Jill D. Montgomery

The Northfield Marauders ran 48 seconds off the clock at the end of the fourth quarter and then fed Tim Martin who beat Randolph with less than three seconds to go.

The Guy Ghosts tightened their defense in the second half but a slim offense didn’t help Randolph any in their opening game of the 2006-07 season at home Tuesday evening.

Randolph started off the game with a bang as big guy, Thomas Jacobs scored the opening volley just four seconds into the game. Zack Allard added a jumper but the Marauders tied the game up four-all. Allard and Jacobs combined for five more points and the Guy Ghosts ended the first quarter ahead, 9-6.

Northfield outscored Randolph 14-7 in the second period to take a 20-16 edge into the halftime break. Jacobs added five of the points and the other hoop came from Connor Fowler. Seven turnovers in the second certainly didn’t help the Ghosts’ offensive game get up and running.

Randolph came within two twice in the third quarter with jumpers from Allard and Fowler and good defense from Ira Tillberg. The Marauders ended the third period with five uncontested points to keep their edge, 29-22.

Sophomore Jon White led off the final stanza with a jump shot at the top of the key. Guard Mike Czok had two defensive steals and a shot from downtown by Tillberg brought the Guy Ghosts back within two, 29-27. Northfield scored on a rebound but Jacobs answered with a steal and a lay-up.

Czok continued to play tough D but Randolph still wasn’t getting the offensive rebounds that they should be. Another steal and hoop by Jacobs tied the contest at 31-31 with 1:37 on the clock. Northfield hit one from the charity stripe for a brief lead but Fowler stole the ball and nailed the lay-up for Randolph’s first lead since the beginning of the second period.

With 51 seconds left on the clock, the Marauders went into stall mode and the tactic paid off as they scored just before the buzzer went off, leaving Randolph without any options. Martin was the high scorer for Northfield with 13 points.

Scoring for the Ghosts were Jacobs with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 8 steals. Fowler added 8 points, Allard had 7, Tillberg 3 and White 2.

The Guy Ghosts play Peoples at home tonight and Mill River away next Tuesday, Dec. 12.

J.V. Win

The J.V. boys meshed well as a team both with the starters and the subs and beat Northfield 44-28. The high scorers were Andrew McClure with 13 and Jason Hicks and Nik Bent each with 9 points.

Gal Ghosts

The Randolph girls also had a tough offensive night as they played Northfield away and lost 27-23. Shelby Peltier led all scorers with 13 points, showing just how little offense there was.

The Gal Ghosts play in the Spaulding Christmas Tournament Thursday and Saturday.
