An early foul on Hornet Brian Ward sent Rocket Brain Dunbar to the line, but Dunbar was unable to light up the boards as Whitcomb and Rochester faced each other in their season opener. With both teams missing the hoop, it took two-plus minutes before Rochester’s Taylor Fuller planted a big one from downtown at 5:25. Only two seconds later, Hornet Cody Griffin cleared the strings from way out to tie it up 3-all and they were off and running in the Hornet’s Nest in the annual Stub Stearns Bean Pot Classic last Friday, Dec. 1. Just three seconds later another Fuller trey had the Rockets back up where they remained in the 59-33 outing. A second ward foul had Dunbar scoring a free toss followed by his only 3-point deposit of the games. A hoop by Lucas Pelletier was followed by Whitcomb’s Justin Rogler, who delivered the fifth triple pointer of the game. Rochester added two more Pelletier hoops and a Jon Colton basket to end the first quarter with 18 points. Cody Griffin scored four points for Whitcomb to finish the period leaving the Hornets trailing. It was a back-and-forth volley as both teams scored one after the other early in the period. Whitcomb’s Rogler started with his second three-pointer of the game followed by a Colton hoop for Rochester. Deven Hill nabbed a basket while Rocket’s Dunbar added one from the line. Rocket Pat Crowley scored a hoop before Bethel’s Rogler nailed his third triple pointer of the game. Hornet C. Griffin added two points before Rochester finished big with another Crowley hoop, two freebies by Dunbar (2 of 4) and a Colton steal and lay-up for a 29 to 22 rocket led at half-time. Rochester came back hot-handed adding 21 points while limiting Whitcomb to five third quarter points. Dustin Roberts scored seven of three points while Colton made three baskets, and Pelletier scored two hoops. Hornet freshman Danny Prey saw significant playing time spelling teammates who from the start collected fouls. Hill fouled out with 1:41 remaining while Ward and Griffin finished the game with four each. Rocket Colton was game high scorer with 15 points followed by Pelletier with 12 points and Dunbar with 11. Rogler finished with 11 points and Griffin had nine points for Whitcomb.
