Gal Ghosts Improve
By Jill D. Montgomery

The RUHS Gal Ghosts participated in the annual Spaulding Tournament last week for the second year in a row. Randolph played Brattleboro Thursday and lost 40-28 to a very tall team.

On Saturday, the Gal Ghosts faced Division I Spaulding and lost a good game, 54-40. Randolph’s record now stands at 0-3, but they have scored more points in each game they’ve played this year.

Coach Alan Stewart said, "It was a much better game. We’re struggling a little, but the offense was better this game and we are starting to shoot better. Our defense still needs work, but I was pleased with the game."

Randolph opened their contest versus Spaulding with a shot from Shelby Peltier at the top of the key. Spaulding bettered that with a three-pointer, but most of the team’s points came from a nice give-and-go move that had the available girl open under the hoop.

Peltier ended the game as the Ghosts’ high scorer and kept Randolph’s offense on track with a nice outside shot, even though she is the tallest player on the team. Gwen Reis chimed in with a hoop and a pair of free throws in the first and Randolph ended the quarter down, 19-10.

The two teams swapped shots for most of the second period. Randolph worked hard to score with Peltier, Reis, Brynn Fabian and Sharayah Nonemacher all scoring for the Gal Ghosts. Spaulding matched all of those points and then took advantage of Randolph’s miscues to gain fast break baskets. The half ended with Spaulding holding a 36-22 edge.

Emily Howe came off the bench in the third to score, after she spent all of the second sitting with foul trouble. Peltier and Nonemacher continued to put in some nice jumpers, but Spaulding increased its lead to 20, 50-30, by the end of the third quarter.

Spaulding ended the game with a 14-point edge, led by sophomore Marissa Velez, with 15 points.

Randolph had two players in double figures, Peltier with 14 and Nonemacher with 10, both with eight rebounds; Reis was close behind with eight and Fabian and Howe both added four. Reis was named to the All-Tournament team and received a trophy after the game.

The Gal Ghosts played Northfield at home Wednesday and travel to Woodstock Tuesday, Dec. 19.
