Two Wins for RUHS Gal Ghosts
By Jill D. Montgomery

The Randolph girls basketball team appear to be moving onto the right track with two wins in the last week of play. RUHS defeated Northfield at home, 41-35 in overtime last Wednesday and pummeled Woodstock away Tuesday, 58-23.

The Gal Ghosts jumped out to a huge lead Tuesday in the opening quarter versus the Woodstock Wasps. Brynn Fabian started the dance with a shot from downtown. The Wasps made a basket but that was matched by Shelby Peltier on what proved to be a 12 point run by Randolph. Gwen Reis provided six of those points as well as three rebounds and a steal.

Andrea Chase came into the game for the first time this year as a bad ankle has kept her out of the action. Randolph struggled with turnovers all game but with timely steals and a hot hand at the hoop, the Ghosts managed to stay way in the forefront. Randolph ended the first ahead, 23-5.

The Ghosts started the second with two steals and two buckets and with additional baskets from Arielle Connolly and Reis the Gal Ghosts found themselves in possession of a 31-5 lead.

Lyndsey Smith came in and scored the last hoop of the period for Randolph and Woodstock finished the half with seven unanswered points. Randolph led 33-13 at the break.

The Gal Ghosts had another big scoring string in the third adding 16 points to Woodstock’s four. Fabian started the scoring just seven seconds in and Reis ended the quarter with a rebound and a put-back.

Peltier and Emily Howe pro-duced nine unanswered points to lead off the final stanza and scored all the Gal Ghosts points in that period. Woodstock went on a bit of a run themselves and ended the night with six points.

Coach Alan Stewart was very happy with the results of the game. "Loved that first quarter. Offensively we came out and took good shots. There’s a lot of things that we’re doing better. I’m very pleased with the girls’ efforts."

Three Gal Ghosts ended the game in double figures. Reis had 18 points, Howe 11 and Peltier 10, Reis and Peltier had double doubles with both nabbing 13 rebounds, and Peltier also had 2 blocks. Fabian had 7 points, Sharayah Nonemacher and Kelsey Higgins each added 4, Connolly and Smith had 2 apiece.

O.T. Win Over Marauders

The Gal Ghosts outscored the Northfield Marauders, 9-3 in overtime action to pull off the win last Wednesday at home, 41-35.

Randolph earned the tip in the four minute O.T. period and Reis made two free throws to start things off. Northfield’s #24 Ellen Ricker, the last in a long line of really good players that have bedeviled Randolph for years, scored underneath to retie the game. Ricker ended the game with 10 points.

Two more from the charity stripe from Higgins put the ghosts back up and Randolph started running time off the clock. Reis scored with two minutes left on the clock. Northfield and Higgins swapped free throws and Howe topped the game off with two more freebies for the final points of the game. Randolph made seven of 12 free throws in the overtime period accounting for all their points except for a hoop by Reis.

The first three quarters of the game were very low scoring. The Marauders had 6 points in the first to Randolph’s 4. The Ghosts outscored Northfield 9-6 in the second to take a 13-12 edge into the break at halftime. Northfield came back in the third adding 9 to Randolph’s 5 to lead 21-18. Randolph put in 14 to the Marauders 11 in the fourth quarter to tie the game 32-all to send the game into extra minutes.

Reis had a heck of a game with another double double with 18 points and 13 rebounds again, Howe added 8 points, Fabian and Higgins each with 5, Peltier 4 and Connolly 1. Howe added 7 rebounds and Nonemacher 6.
