Ghost Wrestlers Place Well

Defying the tough weather on Friday and Saturday, the Ghosts wrestling team made it over to Middlebury for their two-day tournament. The competition started at around two o’clock Friday afternoon. Randolph came home with six place finishers, two of them being first place positions.

100th Win

Wesley Simpson received his 100th career win on Friday evening. W. Simpson is an RUHS senior who has been wrestling since eighth grade, and has made exceptional progress throughout his years. Being one of the team captains, he brings knowledge and good technique to the practice room.

W. Simpson is currently attending Vermont Technical College through the school’s VAST program. Simpson is a good student, and well rounded person. After graduation he plans to attend college where he wants to pursue a career in technology.

First Place Finishers

Seth Dezan started out the tournament seeded number one, and he fulfilled that seed. In the first round Dezan had a bye, going on to quarters and wrestling Pat Shortle of Rutland, defeating him with a pin time of 2 minutes, 27 seconds. In semi’s, Dezan wrestled Sean Daley of Northern Adirondack and defeated him in overtime with a pin time of 6 minutes, 48 seconds.

In the finals, S. Dezan faced Joe Lacross from Mill River and defeated him with a minor decision of 6 to 4. This gave Dezan a first place finish.

Ben Adams went into the tournament seeded second, but over came that seed and placed first. In his first match, Adams wrestled B.J. McIntyre from Granville’s A team and defeated him in the first period with a pin time of 54 seconds. In quarters Adams wrestled Dylan Cady from St. Johnsbury and defeated him with a pin time of 1 minute, 46 seconds.

Moving onto semi’s, Adams wrestled Richard Hall from Fair Haven and pinned him in the first period as well. In finals Adams wrestled Josh Trombley of Northern Adirondack and defeated him with a score of 2 to 1, for the team’s second top finish.

Other Place Finishers

David Maxfield ended the day placing fourth. Maxfield had a bye in the first round and went on to wrestle Sherman Wood of CVU. Maxfield defeated Wood with a pin time of 5 minutes, 9 seconds. In semi’s, Maxfield went up against Shawn Kimball of Mt. Abe. Maxfield was defeated by him in the second period.

Dropping back into consi semi’s, Maxfield wrestled Kaden Odell from Middlebury and defeated him in the second period with a pin time of 2 minutes, 4 seconds. In consi finals, Maxfield wrestled Pat Bishop from St. Johnsbury but was defeated in the second period. Maxfield ended the day with a fourth place finish.

Wrestling at the 125-pound weight class was Matt Simpson. M. Simpson had a bye in the first round, but went on to wrestle Simon Flynn from Vergennes. Simpson defeated Flynn with a pin time of 3 minutes, 49 seconds. In semi’s, Simpson wrestled Clinton McFarren from Granville’s A team. Simpson was defeated by a tech fall.

Dropping down to consi semi’s, Simpson wrestled Mike Smith from Rutland, but was defeated in the first period. In his last match to wrestle for fifth place, M. Simpson wrestled Flynn again and defeated him in the third period, giving him a fifth place finish.

Wes Simpson came into the tournament wrestling at the 119-pound weight class. He had a bye in the first round, but went on to wrestle Jacob Losse from Essex. W. Simpson was defeated by a minor score of 8 to 7. In his next match he wrestled Kale Auger from Fair Haven and defeated him with a pin time of 1 minute, 42 seconds.

In consi quarters, W. Simpson wrestled Kori Martell of Mt. Abe, and defeated him with a decision of 8 to 0. Putting him in consi semi’s, W. Simpson wrestled Matt Fallon from the Ridgefields’ A team, but was defeated with a minor decision. In his last match of the day, Simpson wrestled Jacob Losse for the second time, but was defeated by a minor decision. W. Simpson took home a sixth place finish.

Other Matches

Wrestling in the 160-pound weight class was Stephen Bent. In the first round, Bent wrestled John Durfee of Fair Haven, but was defeated in the first period. Moving down to the consi rounds, Bent wrestled Garrison Leduc of Middlebury. Bent was defeated by a minor decision of 12 to 9.
