Gal Ghosts Split Week
By Jill D. Montgomery

The Randolph Gal Ghosts split their week with a win over Oxbow at home, 58-43 and a loss to Hartford on the road, 48-42.

The Hartford Hurricanes blew hot in the first quarter of Tuesday’s game, outscoring the Ghosts, 15-6. Hartford led 10-0 with 4:13 left in the period before Gwen Reis put Randolph’s first bucket in the hole. Reis scored on a great give and go play and then scored again on Emily Howe’s steal, accounting for all of the Gal Ghosts points in the first quarter.

Shelby Peltier led off the second with a foul shot, that was followed by a rebound and shot by Reis and then two more points from the charity stripe. Peltier added another foul shot as well, cutting the gap to three, 15-12. Randolph kept the Hurricanes out of the scoring column until the clock read 3:13 when they hit a foul shot and their first floor shot of the second.

Howe and Reis sandwiched three-pointers around a Hurricane hoop to end the half down by just two, 20-18. Randolph outscored Hartford 12-5 in the second quarter.

The third period was fairly even with Hartford adding 12 and Randolph 10. Hartford scored their first basket, just six seconds into the third . Reis matched the Hurricanes shot with a fast break lay-up and Ashley Chase bettered that with two from the charity stripe. With superb rebounding from Sharayah Nonemacher, the Gal Ghosts had again pulled within two, 24-22.

The Hurricanes added five points to Randolph’s two before freshman Arielle Connolly banked two hoops in off the glass to bring Randolph within one, 29-28. Hartford ended the third with three points for the four-point edge.

Randolph had their chances in the final stanza, but seem to have lost their scoring touch. It was halfway through the period before Reis hit the first floor shot. The Gal Ghosts never trailed by much, but missed shots and turnovers made it impossible to close the gap.

Hartford’s top scorers were #11 Kate Spydell with 16 and #10 Lesley Bristol with 13 points.

Randolph’s Reis led all scorers with 20 points and she chipped in 11 rebounds for the double double, Fabian had 7 points, Connolly 6, Peltier 4, Howe 3 and Ashley Chase, 2. Nonemacher had 10 rebounds.

The J.V. girls also lost to Hartford. The top scorers were Emily Beaudin with 8, Heather Suprenaut with 8 and Amanda Gerstenmaier with 7.

Win Over Oxbow

The Randolph girls defeated a very short, very young Oxbow team last Friday, 58-43.

Peltier started things off for the Ghosts with a hoop just 11 seconds into the game. Oxbow tied the game up and then retied at 4-4 before taking a brief lead. Fabian hit a jumper for the 6-6 tie and Howe got the go ahead points off a fast break lay-up.

Two foul shots by the Olympians gave the game yet another tie, 8-8, but Howe added three freebies and a bucket, followed by hoops from Fabian and Nonemacher. Nonemacher had a great defensive quarter with three blocks and four rebounds. Randolph ended the opening period with a 17-10 edge.

The Gal Ghosts continued to improve upon their lead in the second with scoring from four players and took a 29-18 lead into the half time break.

Oxbow came out of the locker room fired up and outscored Randolph in the third period, 16-13. Randolph rebounded well but continued to have problems with turnovers. Reis got the hot hand again and scored 11 of the 13 points for the Ghosts in the third.

Reis continued to pour on the offense in the final stanza and scored the first hoop just eight seconds in. Nonemacher added a jumper and Howe scored off a steal from Reis bringing the Ghosts lead to 14, 48-34. Peltier and Fabian added another six points before the Olympians added their first hoop.

Randolph had three players in double figures—Reis with 19, Howe with 15 and Peltier with 12. Fabian and Nonemacher each added 6 points and Peltier had 10 rebounds and Reis added 9. Howe also had 7 steals. The win was a definite team effort by the Gal Ghosts.

The Randolph J.V. squad beat Oxbow also, 44-35. The high scorers were Katie Jickling and Amanda Gerstenmaier each with 10 points and Emily Beaudin and Heather Suprenaut each with 8.

Randolph’s record is now 4-5 with a make up game versus Harwood away Thursday. Randolph travels to Montpelier Saturday, Jan. 13 with the J.V. beginning at 2 and the varsity following at 3:30.
