New Manager at Three Stallion Inn

Oversees Renovation & Expansion

By Martha Slater

As part of a major expansion and renovation of its facilities, the Three Stallion Inn on Stock Farm Rd. in Randolph recently acquired a new management team. Barbara George is the new general manager and her husband, Ray Mulry, is director of conferences, retreats, seminars and executive development.

"Our goal is to make it a destination resort," George explained.

Owned for 35 years by Sam and Jinny Sammis, the inn is set on 1,300 acres, with 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. The inn also overlooks the 18-hole Montague Golf Course and there are plans to enlarge the spa and fitness center, and add single and double squash courts, in a new building next to the pond within the next couple of years.

George added that, "possibly as soon as May," they will break ground to construct a new wing for the main building, which will add 10 more guest rooms.

The brown barn adjacent to the main building is slated to be renovated into a conference center that will hold 135 people. Another barn in back, which opens onto a large grassy area, will have a floating wood floor that will be used for yoga classes, performances by musical ensembles, and other functions.

Guiding a tour through the inn’s main building, which has eight air-conditioned guest rooms, all with private baths; George noted that they have started extensive renovations on the second floor guest rooms.

"All the bathrooms were completely re-done with Carerra marble and heated floors," she noted. "Now, we’re renovating the third floor. Our next phase is to completely replace the bed with European Healthsmart pillow top beds and upgrading the linens and the rest of the bedding.

"As we make those changes, at some point we’ll upgrade some of the furniture. Many of the pieces, though, are antiques from Jinny Sammis’ family, mostly from her grandmother."

The nearby Morgan House has seven additional guest rooms and is often rented by entire groups for weddings and other large events. Room rates, which change seasonally and/or depending upon holidays, range from $130-$265 single or double occupancy in the main inn building and from $105-$180 in the Morgan House.

George explained that her area of expertise is "exceptional customer service." Her job entails overseeing the entire resort: the inn, ski shop, restaurant, kitchen, pub, pool, tennis courts, fitness center, conference rooms, etc.

Born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, George graduated from the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. She moved to the west coast, where she had a construction business and raised her four children.

While living near Lake Tahoe, she was hired as front office manager for the Hyatt Regency there. She later managed a 32-suite resort on the lake, before becoming involved in high-end real estate with Chase International. A move to northern New Mexico, where she was director of operations at the resort at Mineral Springs, preceded her move to Vermont this fall.

Mulry is a clinical sports psychologist and the author of two books, a novel entitled "Teeing Off With the Masters," and his latest, "In the Zone," a book on the fundamentals of sports psychology.

"In the past, I’ve worked with athletes in the NBA and PGA, as well as corporate executives to help them learn the principles of being ‘in the zone.’" Mulry explained.

"I’m looking to evolve that part of the business here. We’d like to provide new kinds of adventures for sports teams, executives and others."

George and Mulry, who arrived at the inn in mid-October from northern New Mexico, are excited about their new opportunity in Vermont.

"When I was introduced to the Sammises, Sam told me about his vision for this place," George recalled. "I thought it was exciting! Sam flew us out here and we decided we wanted to move and make his vision happen."
