A Collection I would like to comment on some recent events and ideas in Randolph that I see as positive. The concept of expanding the Randolph police district to include the entire town is a great one, provided that they pledge to provide 24-hour coverage and to take property crime seriously. This should reduce the taxes for those in the present police district a good bit while not increasing taxes for the rest of the town very much. The proposed expansion of the Three Stallion Inn to include conference facilities is an excellent idea. This will help draw more people to Randolph that might potentially invest in the area. Perhaps this could be coupled with a good mid-tier motel near Exit 4 to handle any overflow of guests. The new equine program at VTC is a very positive step. It dovetails nicely with our local Morgan heritage and with the existing strong interest in horses in the area. It would be great if we could revive interest in some sort of Morgan-related center near I-89, such as a museum. If we can't convince the existing Morgan horse museum to relocate here, we could perhaps start one of our own. This area boasts plenty of scenic trails and dirt roads for riding. Horse-related activities could be an important means of attracting visitors and perhaps some capital to the area. Also, horse farming helps give us a reason to keep our scenic open spaces open. On a slightly different note, I strongly support bringing a state work camp to Randolph. I lived a long time in Georgia, and the sight of prisoners out in the fresh air doing healthful (and helpful) work is familiar to me. With the number of jobs it will bring, I just don't see the downside. I don't see it as incompatible with these other things because their activities will be spread so far and wide they'll be barely noticeable. Peter Magoon Randolph Center |
