When considering whether or not to expand the police district, it might be nice to keep in mind that some residents of the village have paid and continue to pay taxes for the coverage they receive. They also pay for the occasions the "village" police are called outside of the district. As the quickest source of help, officers should —and sometimes do—respond outside the village limits. If a burglar breaks into your house, do you want to hear "Sorry, not our district" when you call for help? Should local police refuse to respond if you are in an accident at Shaws? There are those who see sense in giving the local police department jurisdiction over the whole town. Why is it so hard to ask the whole town to pay for that service? I’ve been doing it for 20 years. Maybe we all could. By the way, the village police department has always been prompt and professional when I call. I doubt the state police could respond anywhere nearly so quickly, stretched as thin as they are. Janet Roberts Randolph village ____________ |
