The Hornet boys team are still looking for their first win of the season as January comes to a close. On Thursday, Jan. 18 Whitcomb traveled to Sharon and faced the TSA Phoenix and it was a close first half that had the Hornets up by one at the break., 18-17. Unfortunately, a strong third quarter for TSA by William Imbo (scoring 12 of his game-high 18 points) addled the Hornets and a dismal free throw performance in the fourth by Whitcomb, 3-of-17, sealed the deal as TSA earned a 49-39 victory. A road trip to Plainfield on Thursday, Jan. 25 had the Hornets facing the Twinfield Trojans and the Hornets came up short 74-47. Whitcomb only trailed by 5 points after the first period 19 to 14, but a strong second period by Greg Blackburn (four 3-pointers) and the Trojans had Twinfield adding 20 points while Whitcomb only managed 8. It was a 39-22 halftime Trojan advantage that the Hornets were unable to erase. Down 57 to 31 after three, Whitcomb finished with 16 additional points while the Trojans added 17 in the Twinfield victory. Trojan Brandon Pierce was high scorer with 19 points followed by Greg Blackburn who had 15 points. Hornet Scott Killian had 14 points for Whitcomb. The Whitcomb boys finished the week with another road trip. It was off to Spaulding High School in Barre to face WBCS for the second time this season. In their closest game this year, Whitcomb lost to Websterville back on December 12, 59 to 57 in three over times, so there was definitely hope for the Hornets. Unfortunately, hope also meant that Whitcomb needed to rein in Isaac Ransom, who scored 30 points in the December contest. They didn’t and Ransom planted 21 points in the game as the Crusaders won 50 to 41. Deven Hill had 13 points for Whitcomb, Matt Durfee, Cody Griffin and Brian Ward all scored 3-pointers in the game. Whitcomb hosts the South Royalton Royals tomorrow and the Cabot Huskies on Wednesday, Feb. 7. Both games start at 7 p.m. ____________ |
