Whitcomb Girls Wrap-Up
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

On the road since January 4, the Whitcomb Hornets played the Cabot Huskies, the D-III South Royalton Royals and the Craftsbury Chargers before returning to home court for back-to-back contests last week to face the Royals again and then United Christian Academy. The Lady Hornets then headed to Spaulding High School in Barre to suit up against the Websterville Baptist Christian School. On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Hornets earned their fourth win of the season against WBCS. This was the second meeting for these teams and the second decisive victory for the Hornets, winning 35-11.

Molly Taylor was high scorer with 13 points, Laurel Adams was next with seven, followed by Demi Aldrighetti with six.

Third Win

On Thursday, Jan. 25, the Hornets won their third game of the season against UCA in Bethel. Ahead by 12 after the first quarter, 17-5, and up 30-7 at the break, it was the Hornets all the way in the 49-22 victory. "Good defense, good rebounding and some fast break conversions" helped Whitcomb earn the win, said Coach Tim Perreault.

Hornet Maggie Eddy and Crusader Alyssa Gosselin shared the high scorer spot with 11 points each. Tracy Zisselsberger followed with 10 for Whitcomb.

Two Losses to SoRo

It was a sweep for neighboring South Royalton as the Royals handed the Hornets double defeats, first a close 42-36 win at the Royal Palace on Jan. 11 and then a 17-point advantage victory at the Hornet’s Nest in Bethel last Tuesday, Jan. 23, 36-19.

Coming off a 10-day break, Whitcomb lagged and came out flat during the first period, which proved to be their undoing.

In the Jan. 11 contest, Hornet Tracy Zisselsberger led all scorers with 15 points. In the Jan. 23 contest, both Jozefiak and Lamson had eight points, followed by Hornet Molly Taylor with five.

Whitcomb traveled to Craftsbury Saturday, Jan. 13, and "it was worth the trip," as the Hornets earned their second victory of the season, 46-43.

Tied at the half, the Hornets kept things tight with Craftsbury and "took it to the line," nabbing 10 of 15 during the fourth period to secure a three-point advantage and the 46-43 win. Zisselsberger had eight points, Demi Aldrighetti had 10, Adams had 11 and Taylor was high scorer with 13.

Upcoming Games

The Hornets play Twinfield this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Plainfield and return to Bethel for Senior Recognition and their last home game against Rochester on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Then they continue their season with road trips to Concord on Friday, Feb. 9, UCA on Saturday, Feb. 10, and TSA on February 13. The Concord and TSA games start at 6 p.m., and the UCA game starts at 11 a.m.
