The first game of the week for the Phoenix against the Twinfield Trojans was a disappointing loss by one point, but fuel for the fire. In the first half of the game, the Trojans kept the upper hand by racking up points with foul shots. About 30% of the points scored by the Trojans by the end of the game were from free throws. The Sharon players returned to the court for the second half ready to play. The Phoenix brought their game up a notch by scoring 38 points in the second half of the game, bringing the score to a close 64-63, with the Trojans still ahead. Tension was high as the two teams battled it out for the win but Sharon couldn’t manage to tie it up. Sharon Coach Kevin Ellis declared, "They just beat us. They played harder than us and it paid off. We need to go back to the drawing board and learn how to play defense." Big Win In the next game two days later, the Sharon boys came out with intensity against the Thetford Panthers. With an impressive 18 points in the first quarter, Thetford didn’t even know what hit them. With players like Willy Ruiz scoring 12 points individually, the Phoenix were on fire. Sharon outpaced Thetford steadily and the game was almost in the bag until the fourth quarter when Thetford came out with ferocity and gained the lead. Sharon wasn’t about to lose another game by a measly point, so they reved it up, taking fast breaks and accumulating more points. By the end of the game every Sharon fan was on their feet screaming. The crowning moment of the game though was when sophomore Evan Frank stole the ball from a Thetford player, took the ball up the court and made an underhand lay-up within the last three seconds of the game. It seems unlikely that the Sharon gym will hear such a deafening collective yell again anytime soon. Thetford Coach Williams courteously responded, "I think Sharon played great, specifically in the first quarter. I think that set the tone for the game. They knocked out some great shots, but we just ran out of gas in the end." Though Thetford fans left the gym a little more forlorn than when they came, every Sharon fan left with a smile on their face. The biggest fan for the Phoenix, Coach Ellis declared, "Our kids played a great game, the game of their lives, a great tribute to their hard work." ____________ |
