Gertrude Murphy

NEW CANAAN, CONN.—Gertrude White Murphy, 98, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, just 26 days short of her 99th birthday.

She was born Feb. 23, 1908 in New Canaan, Conn., the daughter of William I. Campbell and Lillian Brown Campbell. She graduated from Center School in New Canaan and attended Stamford High School.

On June 1, 1926, she married John S. White. During the mid 1940s, she became associated with the Gladys Skillings Dress Shop in New Canaan where she worked for many years, ultimately managing the business.

During her younger years, she was an avid bowler. She was an active volunteer in the Red Cross and other organizations during World War II. She was a long time member of the New Canaan United Methodist Church, a 50-plus year member of the Eastern Star and a long time member of the Sellecks Corner Cemetery Association and Barnegat Rd. Chapel.

After the death of her first husband, she married William Murphy in 1961. He died in 1966. She moved to Bethel in 1982 in order to be near her son, who had moved there in 1975.

In 2006, she moved into Mayo Manor in Northfield.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, William and Lester Campbell; and a granddaughter, Laurie White Greer.

Survivors include her son, John C. White of Bethel; a daughter-in-law, Harriet MacMaster White; three grandchildren: Susan White Messervey of Westport, Conn.; John C. White II of Jericho Center, and Robert M. White of South Royalton; a step-daughter, Janice Murphy Baldwin of Madison, Wis.; a step-daughter-in-law, Jean Murphy of Tuscon, Ariz.; and numerous great-grand children, nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services were held at the Hoyt Funeral Home, in New Canaan, Conn. February 3, and interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan.
