SoRo Senior Girls
Provide Role Models
By Anneke Van Fossen

Three South Royalton High School senior girls who play on the varsity basketball team have been volunteering their time this season to coach a third and fourth grade girls’ team.

Amanda Tibbetts, Chelsea Wilmot, and Mairi Lamson have utilized their basketball knowledge and their ability to work with children to help these young athletes improve their skills and confidence on the court.

These high school role models have been affecting the girls off of the court, as well, earning them great admiration in the eyes of the seven elementary students. Several of the girls regularly support their coaches by cheering for them at varsity games.

Along with a parent who lends a hand in times of scheduling conflict, Lamson, Wilmot, and Tibbetts have coached the girls through several games against local teams. This Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m., their final game of the season will take place at the South Royalton Gym.

The three young women are not the only high school athletes who have taken their game to a different level this winter. Jeffrey Russell has been coaching the third and fourth grade boys’ basketball team and Jacob Thomas has assisted in the instruction of a Woodstock elementary team. All have experienced in a new way a sport that they enjoy while reinforcing a positive energy outlet for these aspiring competitors.
