Less than 24 hours after the Hornets dispatched the Rockettes back to Rochester with a one point defeat and only their second loss of the season, Whitcomb hopped on the bus for a make-up game against the Red Devils in Chelsea. Whitcomb bested Chelsea by seven 25 to 18, in a recent away game. Leading 11 to 8 at the break, it was close all the way before Whitcomb sealed the victory from the strip going 6-for-9 during the fourth quarter. Hornet Molly Taylor was high scorer with 9 points, followed by Robyn Kennedy wit 7 points for the Red Devils. Whitcomb now stands 7-9. Away Games It was a weekend of travel and basketball as the Hornets played the Wildcats in Concord on Friday evening and then traveled to Newport Saturday to play the United Christian Academy Cru-saders On Friday the Hornets faced Concord in their only meeting of the season and it was the host team who earned the win, but it took a dose of double overtime in order for them to do so. Molly Taylor had 13 points in the outing followed by Maggie Eddy with 11 points. Saturday morning Whitcomb took on UCA for the second time this season and earned their second victory over their hosts, 42-30. Leading by just two at the top of the fourth, Whitcomb held United Christian Academy to two points while nabbing 12 to pull away and claim the victory. Eddy had 11 points and Taylor had 10. On Monday, Feb. 13 the Hornets met the Black River Presidents for Senior Recognition Night, and Whitcomb went five better than their guests and earned their eighth win with a 40-35 tally. Four Whitcomb seniors were recognized, Chelsie Brown, Maggie Eddy and Tracy Zisselsberger, and foreign exchange student Kirsten Krautlein. Megan Combatti got things started with a beautiful 3-point swish as the Presdents put the Hornets in a come-from-behind position at the top of the game. Allison Gillette made it 5-zip on the next trip down the court before Zisselsberger took a third chance rebound up and into the strings to get the Hornets into the game. Unfortunately, sophomore Courtney Robrig (the girl most likely to score at any sport she plays) put in four consecutive hoops while Whitcomb struggled to score. Whitcomb did manage to get a basket from both Molly Taylor and Laurel Adams, as well as going 2-of-4 from the line. Buy that was it as Black River took a seven point lead into the second quarter. During the second period the Hornets began to frustrate the Presidents, Robrig in particular, and scored nine quick points with baskets by Zisselsberger and Adams while limiting Black River to two baskets. At the four minute mark, Bethel tied the game with a basket by Brown at 19-all. At the break it was a tied affair. The third quarter was a point-for-point match with both teams scoring 10 each. Two quick fouls on Zisselsberger put both Robrig and Combatti at the stripe with both being on the money. Fouls on Black River netted the Hornets four points also as Adams and Zisselsberger scored. Emily Wright got the bonus toss after scoring from underneath, and after three it was anybody’s game. Robrig went to the line early but only scored one point and Brown matched the effort to keep the game tied. Robrig hooped a basket and Eddy retied it on the next possession. Baskets by Taylor, Eddy and then Taylor again got the Hornets up, but a basket by Kathleen Thompson and one free toss by Combatti threatened the Hornets before Eddy and Adams both put in freebies late enough to seal the victory. Robrig scored 15 points and Combatti followed with 10 for Black river. Adams led Whitcomb with 12 points and Zisselsberger added 10. Whitcomb traveled to Sharon last night and faced the Phoenix for their last regular game of the season at TSA on their Senior Recognition Night. _____________ |
