Gaelic Storm at Chandler March 2
The Irish Band, Gaelic Storm, will perform at Chandler Music Hall in Randolph Friday, March 2, beginning at 7:30 p.m. First formed among friends in a California Irish Pub on St. Patrick’s Day in 1966, Gaelic Storm was catapulted into public view and international fame after their cameo appearance as the Irish party band in James Cameron’s blockbuster move hit, "Titanic." The band has since recorded six chart-topping albums and toured aggressively, playing over 125 dates per year. Gaelic Storm continues to broaden the musical horizons of the Celtic music genre by creating compelling original pieces and fresh arrangements steeped in Irish traditional melody and acoustic instrumentation, combined with their unique blend of world rhythms. Their dynamic stage show features rousing upbeat vocals, wild energetic dance tunes, haunting Celtic ballads and infectious madcap humor. Their trademark energetic performance style and enthusiastic audience interaction makes the band a front-runner in the Celtic music genre today. Gaelic Storm also continues to headline some of the largest Celtic folk festivals in the world, including Festival Interceltique in Lorient, Brittany; the Pittsburgh Irish Festival; and Dublin Irish Festival. Remarkably, the band has headlined the largest U.S. Irish festival, Milwaukee Irish Fest, for four straight years, becoming an exception to the festival's usual policy of not inviting artists to perform in consecutive years. For all the "Irishness" of the music so rowdily presented by this band, the members are international. Founder Patrick Murphy indeed hails from Cork, Ireland. But Peter Purvis comes from Merrickville, Ontario; Steven Twigger from Coventry, England; Ryan Lacey from New Jersey, and Ellery Klein, a graduate of UVM and a founding member of New World Festival favorite, "Whiskey Before Breakfast," was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. The instruments featured on the stage include uillean pipes, whistles, piano, accordion, mandolin, bouzouki, Bodran, djembe, spoons, harmonica, guitar, fiddle, didgeridoo, and a voice here and there. For the Randolph audience celebrating this group’s 11th anniversary, the Village Voice sums up the whole experience: "Beyond their Hollywood cameo, Gaelic Storm is a whirlwind ruckus, able to knock out an homage to the ocean and to whiskey in a theater, pub, or barge." Tickets may be reserved by calling the Chandler box office at 728-6464 Monday through Friday between 3-6 p.m., or online at tickets@chandler-arts.org. For more information check the Chandler website at www.chandler-arts.org or the group’s website at www.gaelicstorm.com. This concert is presented by Chandler Center for the Arts and has been underwritten by First Light Studios and Stillwater Graphics. Chandler Music Hall is wheelchair accessible. ____________ |
