As a Reiki Master/Teacher I am compelled to respond to the recent letter form Donna, regarding her comments about Reiki. My husband and I have practiced Reiki for ten years and been Reiki Masters/teachers for six years. We have been invited to give Reiki treatments by the American Cancer Society at their "can-do" weekend and been sponsored by Plymouth State College to facilitate free Reiki clinics for the students. We have held many free clinics and volunteered at Gifford Hospital giving Reiki treatments to staff and patients. I tell you this not to extol our accomplishments, but to illustrate I have never known any Reiki practitioner to claim that Reiki will cure any disease. Reiki works with energy. It works in conjunction with Western medicine and enhances your body’s own healing system. It in no way takes the place of Western medicine, and no reputable Reiki Master will make such claims. To do so would not only be irresponsible but also dangerous. Reiki does not require the same amount of study and time as a medical doctor requires because you are not practicing medicine. During a Reiki treatment it is the recipient of the Reiki energy who is determining where and how much energy is being received. There is nothing we are actually "doing" to anyone. When you turn on a light bulb the electricity travels from the power source through the wiring to the light bulb. A Reiki practitioner acts in the same way. We are the wire. The recipient draws the energy in to their body and determines where it will go on an unconscious level. Reiki is now available at many major and local hospitals. Not to take the place of the medical practice, but to accompany it. Reiki will relax you and ease any anxiety you may be feeling before surgery. It will accelerate your healing process after surgery; it will lessen pain so you will require less medication. Reiki is often used in hospice situations for end-of-life care. It can ease the transition in the dying process. My husband and I practiced Reiki on my father as he was dying and it lessened his agitation, allowing him to pass on in a more relaxed, calmer manner. We have taught Reiki to a parent with an autistic child. She called later to tell us she could now help her son to relax and fall asleep. Everyone uses their own energy at one time or another to make themselves or their child feel better. When you bump your arm you grab it and hold on. You are transferring energy from one part of your body to another to make it feel better. If your child is crying you hold them to soothe them. You are transferring your energy to them. Reiki is simply drawing the "universal energy" to do this rather than depleting your own energy. Sometimes people that know very little about Reiki, and have never experienced it have a hard time understanding it and its place in our life. I would like to offer Donna a Reiki treatment at no charge so that she might experience it before making up her mind about its worth or lack of it. I would also be glad to answer any questions she might have about Reiki. Donna, please feel free to e-mail me at jaevoner@yahoo.com to either answer any questions or set up an appointment for a treatment. Joann Voner Braintree _____________ |
