End of Season
For Lady Hornets
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The #9 Whitcomb Hornets and the #8 Cabot Huskies both traveled to Hardwick for play-down action on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Hazen Union High School. It was the Lady Hornets who got back on the bus with the goods as they upset Cabot 38 to 34 earning the win and booking a trip to the #1 Canaan Eagles home court.

Whitcomb led by three after the first quarter 9 to 6 but trailed by two heading into the break before returning to clinch it during the fourth period from the stripe. Maggie Eddy was golden from the line for the Hornets going 4-for-4 while Cabot got the goose egg with zilch.

Husky Kate Rossell had 13 points and Eddy finished with a team-high 18 points for Whitcomb. Molly Taylor chipped in 8 points for the Hornets.

Loss to Canaan

In a town just south of the Canadian border the Whitcomb Hornets bowed out of the post-season in the quarter-finals against the Canaan Eagles. Top-seeded Canaan beat the ninth-seeded Hornets 39-29 earning the Eagles a trip to the Barre Auditorium.

Although Whitcomb was able to hold the Eagles to just four second quarter points, they were outscored by nine points in the third, and fouls and free tosses only added to Whitcomb’s woes. Canaan went 14-of-29 while Whitcomb could only go 5-of 10.

Laurel Adams and Taylor each scored 8 points for the Hornets. Whitcomb ends the season 11-12 and graduates Maggie Eddy, Chelsea Brown and Tracy Zizzelsberger.
