Chelsea Girls
Lose in Playoffs
By Mary Childs

The Chelsea girls finished their season believing they were ranked 13 and traveling to West Rutland. However a mix up between index points flip-flopped Chelsea and Concord. After recalculations Chelsea was ranked 14 and their new destination was Danville.

Last Wednesday, Feb. 21, the Lady Devils traveled to the home of the Danville Indians to play their playoff game. Within a few minutes of the game Chelsea learned that Danville is a powerhouse.

In the first quarter Danville shut down Chelsea offensively and tore up the Chelsea defense. Danville’s Eliza Wakefield shut down Chelsea’s Jill Cray and plugged up the paint, disabling Cray from getting a shot. By the end of the first quarter the score was 15-2, Danville with a huge advantage.

The Chelsea girls didn’t give up. They continued to play with heart and determination. In the final seconds of the first half Robyn Kennedy took the ball from one baseline to another, splitting the defense for a lay-up and sending the teams into the locker rooms with Danville ahead 28-8. The Danville Indians sank a high percentage of shots, whereas the Chelsea Devils couldn’t get a shot off.

The third quarter proved to be Chelsea’s best. Chelsea picked up their defense and boxed out underneath to keep Danville to 10 points in the eight-minute quarter. On the offensive end, Mary Childs and Kennedy continued to drive to the basket to draw the fouls. Samantha Bonasera hit Chelsea’s only outside shot in the third quarter. Chelsea played almost even with the Indians to lead them into the fourth down by 23 points.

In the fourth quarter Danville outscored Chelsea 12-3. Danville took away a 50-18 win.

Kennedy and Childs combined for 15 points for the Red Devils, Kennedy with eight and Childs with seven. Bonasera chipped in two points. Cray was shut down and held to a lone foul shot.

Wakefield was Danville’s high scorer with 14 points.

The Chelsea girls finish their season with a 6-15 record and wish the best of luck to the Danville Indians.
