Two Tiny Schools Separate votes in Hancock and Granville Tuesday made it likely that both towns will close their schools, instead sending the dwindling population of those two schools—about 40 this year—to other towns on a tuition basis. The two towns act as a single school district that houses two grades, plus kindergarten, in the one-room Granville School and four grades in the two-room Hancock School while tuitioning out students starting in the seventh grade. However, voters in both towns seemed to conclude Tuesday that it has become too expensive to try to keep up the local schools and that tuitioning will be a better option. Hancock School Board Chair Jill Jesso said that she would take the vote as being a directive to close the school; but in Granville, Kristi Fuller pointed out there was no specific directive to close the school and she will be searching for further feedback. More information can be found in Town Meeting accounts from both towns. |
