Burglars Strike
RUHS, Skate Park
By Sandy Vondrasek Cooch

Randolph police are seeking information on burglaries of two public buildings in Randolph last Thursday, March 8, in which the thief or thieves made off with $425-$525 in cash, plus a $100 safe.

According to Krakowiecki, a safe containing $120 was removed from the building at the Randolph skate park, sometime between 2-8:30 a.m. Thursday. Later that day, employees at Randolph Union High School found that the food services office had been broken into, with another $300-$400 taken from a roll-away cart that had been locked in the office.

A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest, and those with information can be assured that their identity will not be disclosed, RPD Chief Jim Krakowiecki said this week

The skate park burglary was discovered at 8:30 a.m by Boys and Girls Club employee Kelly Mitchell, when she opened up the building.

Randolph police responded, finding that the perpetrator(s) had removed a Plexiglas exterior window, by unscrewing the frame, and then smashed the double-pane glass behind it to gain entry.

A rock was found inside the building. Bolts that secured the safe to the floor were loosened and the safe removed.

According to Chief Krakowiecki, the skate park building had been closed at 11 p.m. the previous evening, and had been checked and found secure by Sgt. David Leighton at about 2 a.m.

Less than 12 hours after the skate park burglary was reported, RPD was advised at 7:25 p.m., of a break-in at Randolph Union High School..

It is estimated that this daring break-in occurred sometime between 4-7 p.m., while several activities were going on and custodians were working, albeit elsewhere in the school. Entry had been gained via a window on the back-side of the school, which had apparently been broken by a "large beam" found outside, police reported.

In both incidents, it appears that the thief or thieves knew exactly what they wanted—money—and exactly where to find it, Chief K noted this week. Those with information are urged to contact RPD at 728-3737.
