Bernice Daniels

BOSCAWEN, NH—Bernice (Bernie) D. (Levy) Daniels, 93, died in the care of the Hospice at Merrimack County Nursing Home Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

Born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, she was the seventh child of Robert and Elfreda Levy. She emigrated from Canada to Methuen, Mass. May 10, 1924 and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1931.

She moved to Tewksbury, Mass. in 1932 and entered nursing training at the former Massachusetts State Infirmary, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1935 and working there until retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Mass State Infirmary Nurses’ Alumni Society. She served as a maternity nurse at the Tewksbury State Hospital welcoming hundreds of children into the world and taking care of young mothers.

She married Leon Daniels February 4, 1937. She lived in Tewksbury, Mass. for 60 years, moved to Canterbury, N.H. in 1992, Rochester, Vt. in 2000 and Boscawen, N.H. in 2005.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Fijalkowski, and her husband, Peter; a son, the Rev. Dr. William (Bill) Daniels and his wife, Eileen; five grandchildren: Kathleen Mayer and her husband, Jeffery; Richard Fijalkowski and his wife, Sadie: Beth Chudoba, Craig Chudoba and his wife, Theresa; and Deborah Daniels; five great-grandchildren: Christopher Mayer, Ashley Mayer, Tatiyana Chudoba, Elizabeth Fijalkowski and Terrence Chudoba; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, six brothers, and three sisters.

Calling hours were held at the Farmer and Dee Funeral Home in Tewksbury, Mass. Saturday, March 10, followed by a memorial service, with burial at Tewksbury Cemetery. Her son, the Rev. Dr. Bill Daniels officiated.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be sent to the Merrimack County Nursing Home Residents’ Activity Fund, 325 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, N.H. 03303.
