Central Vermont Medical Center announced this week that Joseph Kiernan MD has opened Central Vermont General Surgery in Berlin, on the CVMC campus.

Dr. Kiernan, who lives in Randolph, received his MD from Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio.

He did his surgical residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston and at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.

Dr. Kiernan is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

He was most recently a hospital-employed surgeon at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

Prior to practicing in Vermont, Dr. Kiernan was in a multi-specialty group practice at Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, NH.

For six years, Dr. Kiernan was an active duty general surgeon with the United State Navy Department of Medicine. His tour of duty included deployment to Desert Storm for the first Gulf War. He received a number of honors including the Sea Service Ribbon, the Kuwait liberation medal (Saudi Arabia) and the National Defense Medal.

Prior to his tour of duty with the navy, Dr. Kiernan was a general surgeon at St. Andrew’s Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, Me.

Dr. Kiernan and his wife Llynne, a nursing instructor at Norwich University, have two children, Erin, 14, and James, 12. They live in Randolph.

"I am happy to be a part of the Central Vermont Medical Center, and look forward to establishing relationships with patients, staff and the community." stated Kiernan. "I believe caring for patients in their own communities is beneficial to the patient and the family. The future is bright at CVMC, with a new operating room suite scheduled to come on-line early this fall."
